I have no idea how long we were walking for.
I don’t think it was that long, maybe ten or fifteen minutes. But when you’re in a pitch black tunnel that’s full of unexpectedly heavy air and reeks of dust and damp mud, with a phone that won’t keep the screen and the torch app on at the same time, it’s surprising how quick you lose track of time. Or maybe constantly waiting for Cloak-wearing psychopaths to jump out of you just makes it seem like you’re walking for a lot longer than you actually are. (In fairness, I wasn’t really expecting Knight or any of the Cloaks to be hanging out in that tunnel. But you never know, do you? Maybe hanging out in underground tunnels is the number one hobby for psychopaths.)
But however long it took us, we did eventually reach another break-out area.
It was connected to the mine by a walkway to our left that curved up a gentle slope, and it was a lot lighter and smaller than the one we’d just left. Not only that, it was much emptier as well; the four beams were there, built into the four corners and propping up the muddy roof above us, and there was another decrepit wooden ladder – this one much more like a steep staircase than the ladder in the first pit – leading up to the woods through a an opening that was so overgrown, chunks of long grass were dangling around the entrance to the pit.
‘I prefer this pit,’ Angie said with satisfaction, when we’d took a couple of seconds to glance around the place. ‘Knight should’ve picked this one, it’s much nicer.’
I mentally compared the two pits side-by-side.
With the way the light was trickling down from the entrance, brightening up the place and making the dust floating around almost look sparkly, it definitely reminded me of somewhere you’d see fairies prancing about on a kids’ TV show.
The pit we’d just come from though, with its moisture and its gloominess (which was probably much darker in my head) and its delightful smell absolutely screamed WITCH in comparison.
‘Mmm,’ I told her, scrunching my mouth to one side. ‘I’m not sure this one has the vibe that Knight’s going for.’
I wandered over to the ladder and put my hands on either side of it, when Angie took a couple of surprisingly quick steps towards me and put one hand on my arm.
‘Wait a minute, Tidge,’ she said, frowning slightly. ‘I know we said we’d see where the mine led to, but... are you sure this is a good idea?’
My eyes darted to the opening and then back down to her. ‘I can’t see Knight or any of the Cloaks being up there. It’s broad daylight.’
‘We don’t know what’s up there,’ she reminded me, raising her eyebrows. ‘We could be popping up into a Cloak compound, for all we know. I’m just worried about your leg,’ she added, when I blinked at her a couple of times.
